More often than not, when it comes to self-care and support, mothers miss out. Not by design, but by default; when the needs of other family members – especially children – can take priority. But this is not sustainable. The needs of a mother are just as important. Of course, our little ones deserve attention, but so does their mum! You can’t, as they say, pour from an empty cup
Each year on Mothers’ Day, we honour and celebrate the women in our lives who birthed us, raised us and care for us still. At this time of year, there are always plenty of interesting articles on what gifts to get for Mum and how to spoil her on this day. We’d also like to give you, the mother herself, some ideas on how to treat yourself – not just on this one day, but regularly. And you can pass these on to your family, so they can spoil you too.
Mamas, treat yourself.
Take a bath
Yawn, how simple. But the value of a good long soak in a warm tub of water cannot be overstated. Firstly, the luxury of peace and quiet – and precious time to yourself – is a gift in itself. This is a rare indulgence for many busy mothers. Secondly, soaking in warm water can help to slough off layers of dead skin and promote better circulation, leaving you feeling loose, limber and relaxed. The addition of magnesium salts (2 cups dissolved into a bath) will relax tight, sore muscles, can help to reduce stress and exert a beneficial effect on metabolic and cardiovascular health. Give yourself an hour to do nothing more than sit, soak and relax.
You read that right, eat and enjoy chocolate! Good quality chocolate that is, with a cacao content of at least 70%. This cacao content is associated with many health benefits, from improving heart health to enhancing memory and cognition. Eating chocolate also, for most of us, feels good. It is delicious and indulgent and can stimulate the production of the ‘happy hormone’ serotonin. So, get yourself some good quality chocolate to indulge in, and advise your family to put this on their gift list as well.
Take a hike
We mean that in the nicest possible way! Studies have shown that the more green you see, the better you feel. Getting out in nature is a wonderful thing to do for body, mind and spirit. This doesn’t have to involve a convoluted trip to bushland or seaside – though it can if you want – it can be as simple and lovely as a picnic in the local park. Greenspace and fresh air provide an opportunity to get out of your head and into your body, shift perspective, connect with nature and get some vitamin D. It also offers time out of the usual routine, when you can slow down and relax. Give yourself a morning, afternoon or day to indulge in this simple pleasure.
Invest in yourself
Remember this: you are worth a regular investment. Of whatever you need: time, attention, finances, emotions. Something many mothers know, but many, many others forget. It is neither extravagant nor indulgent to take care of yourself. It’s a necessity! Mothers’ Day is the perfect opportunity to be reminded of this, but we encourage you to invest in yourself all year round! Your needs, your health, wellbeing and identity are important and should be prioritised accordingly. Talk to us about how we can help you meet your needs.
Mama, you’re worth it. Treat yourself!
